configured a few ESX hosts, have to manually add WWPNs on system manager, eventually rebooted esx host to see devices. Why we have to manually add WWPNs? is that caused by host compitability or there is any way work around? thanks
why do we have to manually add WWPNs for FC hosts on system manager?
Re: why do we have to manually add WWPNs for FC hosts on system manager?
They're used in conjunction with igroups so the storage / (ONTAP) knows what disk(s) to hand out to what host(s)
Re: why do we have to manually add WWPNs for FC hosts on system manager?
If I recall for both FC and iSCSI:
If you setup Zoning on the FC switches (for FC only) and/or point the iSCSI hosts at the NetApp for login
then I believe things like "fcp initiator show" and "iscsi initiator show" whill show all FC and/or iSCSI initiators talking to ONTAP.
When you go to the GUI/System Manager and try to create an initiator group, I believe it does in fact pull up any WWPN or IQNs that are talking to ONTAP. Now, with WWPNs, what you DO NOT have is which host belongs to to which WWPN. iSCSI typically has the hostname in the IQN so it is easy. With FC< you really need to know what hosts the WWPNs belong to.
Re: Want to migrate 7-mode volumes to Cluster-mode piecemeal
The whole point of using 7MTT is to automate identity migration. If you just want to transition volume content - why not simply use snap mirror directly?
Re: cluster peer show - availability pending
Hi Steve,
Was the issue i'm facing the similar issue.
Thanks,

Re: why do we have to manually add WWPNs for FC hosts on system manager?
in my case, after we made zones, went to GUI for creating igroup, we didn't see host initators in pull down list, we manually added the wwpns for hosts, we ran "igroup show -igroup <xxxx> -instance", all ports showed "not logged in", eventually we had to reboot our hosts to see devices on hosts. Not sure if we missed any steps.
Migrate SVM from one cluster to another
We need to migrate a SVM hosting CIFS/NFS share in a multiprotocol setup from one NetApp cluster to another cluster (newer hardware). I have used 7MTT in the past to perform 7-mode to cluster mode migrations. Similarly, is there a tool that NetApp offers to migrate SVM between cDOT's. Can use snapmirror to replicate volume, but looking for if there is a tool like 7MTT available that can migrate configuration (CIFS permissions, NFS exports, quota config, home directory config, etc) along with data and perform pre-cutover test prior to cutover
While looking came across SVM DR. Is that the only option we have with cDOT?
Please advice.
Re: Migrate SVM from one cluster to another
It would be easier if you plugged newer hardware into the switch, assuming it's not a switchless cluster and do vol moves, but if that's not the case, then svm-dr is the easiest thing for you
Re: Migrate SVM from one cluster to another
Have you looked at SVM DR? Start here: https://docs.netapp.com/ontap-9/topic/com.netapp.doc.pow-dap/GUID-B9E36563-1C7A-48F5-A9FF-1578B99AADA9.html

Re: Want to migrate 7-mode volumes to Cluster-mode piecemeal
I like the benefits of all the protocol and compatibility checks between 7mode and cluster-mode that are done as a part of using 7MTT.
Re: why do we have to manually add WWPNs for FC hosts on system manager?
i've seen it behave like that before. did you rescan after your added the initatiors in vmware?
Re: why do we have to manually add WWPNs for FC hosts on system manager?
Two things here
1. after the zones are created on the switch, you should be able to do something like "show flogi database" on a Cisco MDS and see which targets and initiators are logged in. After verifying the zones on the switches if the GUI is open you may need to force a refresh to have the GUI see the WWPNs in the pull down. They do show. But a GUI refresh may be needed
2. on the hosts the Trevor was not needed either. After the zones are set and the igroups are created and the LUNs are mapped the host only needs to rescan the FC bus for new targets. When you rebooted it forced a scan anyway
Re: why do we have to manually add WWPNs for FC hosts on system manager?
i am pretty sure we refresh the GUI, a few people checked on different system manager consoles.
Re: Migrate SVM from one cluster to another
they are two node switch less clusters.
Re: Migrate SVM from one cluster to another
I will look into SVM-DR. Hopefully it can replicate configurations and provide a way to perform pre-cutover test like in 7MTT.
not sure SVM DR is a use case for migration purposes.
Re: Migrate SVM from one cluster to another
100% svm-dr use case can be migration if you are switchless..
Re: Migrate SVM from one cluster to another
I agree. I would think that any process that works for DR, which effectively migrates workloads from one cluster to another (and SVM DR optionally brings over all configuration and IP's with it) would be exactly what you're looking for.
Re: There no Latency and IOPS on LIF's , why?
How could I tell or indentify if a LIF is the bottleneck of a performance issue in a NFS situation?
snapshots for ESX
does NetApp have snapshot agent for ESX? i did see somebody talking about restore VMs from NFS volumes. But how about snapshots on LUN volumes for datastores? does it help for any VM protections? Can someone share your experience? thanks
Re: snapshots for ESX
Hi,
This will help you get started.

Additional info : If in case you plan to use 'SnapCenter' data protection software from NetApp, then you can import the VSC settings into the SnapCenter and manage the backups from a single application. You can use the NetApp Import Utility for SnapCenter and Virtual Storage Console to migrate the backups, backup jobs, and storage connections. The utility is in the NetApp Support Toolchest. This utility helps customers using VSC 6.x to import metadata to SnapCenter 3.0.1, 4.0, and, 4.1.x, NetApp Data Broker 1.0 or later and to VSC virtual appliance 7.0 or later. Please note, it is not necessary to use SnapCenter for VSC, you can simply download the tool and follow the instructions mentioned in the documentation.
Before downloading the VSC, make you run through the Interoperability matrix tool to determine the correct version of VSC supported with your ONTAP version.
http://support.netapp.com/matrix
Pick Storage Solution Search, select Virtual Storage Console, view refine search results - Select the ONTAP, Hypervisor, vCenter and see the supported versions of VSC appropriate for your component's version.
Thanks!
