Re: Ontap 9.5 P1 Cluster Links both down during/after upgrade

Is this production?  if so I would open a P1 ASAP.

That said...

The Cluster ports and the alerts you got don't look like they are related.   e0a and e0b are the cluster ports,  the others, e0c and e0d, are part of an LACP group.

Are all the ports on the controller dead?

Are both nodes currently booted?

Is the cluster currently in a mix-version state?

Mar 27 17:30:33 [aff220-02:netif.init.failed:ALERT]: Initialization of network interface e0b failed due to unexpected software error ix:9.

I moved all VMs away from it before updating Smiley Wink So no production.

Its just cluster ports e0a and e0b are dead, aprox. since during the update of 1 node from 9.4 to 9.5.

Node 02 went fine, even saw the check mark in the cluster update overview, the 2nd node then began to be stuck. and i recently saw a line which said firmware update of the nic e0a failed ? Could that be the reason why the cluster interconnect

was down ?

i can boot both, yesterday i could even backup_boot 9.4 or choose 9.5 normal boot.

Since Node 01 never went completely through with the upgrade i have a mixed version state yes.

Wow,  that's crazy/weird!   I would for sure open a ticket.

But yeah,  thats why your cluster can't come up.   You could try rolling back at this point and see what happens, but honestly not 100% sure that would help at this point if those ports are bricked.

Mapping/Unmapping LUNS on Windows Server

I currently have a FAS3170 running Data ONTAP 8.0.5 7-Mode. A LUN from this filer is currently connected to a WIndows Server 2008 machine. I need to unmap the LUN from this server, and remap it to a different Windows Server 2012 R2. I am having difficulties trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am still very new to this technology.

Thanks in advance...

NDMP MIgration from Isilon

Customer has a new FAS8200 with 9.4 ONTAP. They also have an older Isilon with 100+ CIFS shares and around 200 million small to tiny files. The Isilon is currently being backed up by Commvault. The shares have been modified through the years to effectively negate XCP from contention as no one has rights to everything (or, even any large portion).

Since Comvault is working I asked to have an account added to the Backup role and in the Backup Operators group. This action allowed me to use XCP SCAN on about 1/3 of the Isilon, most of the shares gave me access denied.

Customer is wondering, "The Isilon had a tool that just used NDMP to copy this stuff onto it with the permissions in this state, why can't you do the same thing in reverse?"  So, that leads to the questions I have for the community. Is there a NetApp tool analogous to isi_vol_copy? Is ndmpcopy going to be able to foot the bill, and if so what is the steps to do so? I can't imagine this is the only customer with a NAS situation this messy, so what are the available options?  Thanks.

if the ownership is not removable, what should I do to stop the ontap alert since these disks are not being used.

Also, can i disconnect the disk shelf without worry about this two failed disk ownsership?

If you do "storage disk show" does it list an owner on the failed disks?  Failed disks lose their ownership.

You can just remove the disks before you do anything with the shelf.   As far as the alert,  you should just be able to ack it.

does this 2012 host have existing luns from the 3170?    if not you will need to create igroups on the netapp with the servers iqn or wwns and configure MPIO and zoning if you're using FC.

But the process would go something like this:

1. Stop IO to the disk/lun that you are moving and offline the disk.     (or shut down the host and make sure nothing is set to use that disk)

2. Unmap the lun from the current server's igroup

3. Map the lun to the new server's igroup.

4. Rescan HBAs on the new host.  You should see the disk pop up at this point.

Most of these steps are best  performed from NetApp SnapDrive for Windows (downloadable under software on the NSS).

Only thing SDW does not do, is stop the IO from a possible application on the Windows2008 host (although it can initiate a quiesce through use of VSS).

Best way would be to stop your application (if applicable), use SDW to unmap the lun (it's called disconnect in SDW).

Then on the Windows2012 host (shouldn't  you be moving to Windows2016 at least by now?) run SDW to connect to the lun.

If there is no existing iSCSI/FCP connection, SDW will start a wizard for you to connect to the controller.

Would love to get an update on what caused this.

In ONTAP9.5 NetApp did a lot of changes on their networking stack (see TechONTAP podcast 181)

The firmware update failure could indicate that the ASIC is broken and you would need to replace the controller.

I have not heard of any bugs with e0a/b/c/d on AFF220, but since platform is relatively new, our installed base is limited.

Actually we just wiped it again and started all over. The good thing is, its all working now though. Didnt have time to play around longer since i need it. Links are up, 9.5 P1 (its a Lenovo AFF220 Think System) cause i cant get P2 yet. But its all back to normal, im gonna try to Cluster Update it again when i get P2 and will report if i see something special or if the failover again fails.

thanks for the help

Good to hear, bit invasive but it works Smiley Happy

You should at least make sure you can update your Service Processor to the lalest firmware.

If Lenovo hasn't released it yet, I would be very very surprised considering NetApp Security Advisory.

The Windows Server 2012 R2 machine does not have any LUNs mapped to it at all.

I was able to remove the LUN mapping from the old server without incident. However, after creating an iGroup for the new server and mapping the LUN, the drive never shows up within Windows no matter how long I wait. I don't know what else to try next, as this is getting to be extremely important and I can't get it to work.

Does the FC switch need to be rezoned with the new information?

Yes.  You need to update / add zones to the new server.

Aggregate colum is missing in Flexvolspacedetails in NetAppDocs 3.4 (Excel)

Hello,

Does anybody has a workaround or to Developers(NetApp) how to filter volumes based on per aggregtes in Excel TAB (FlexVolSpaceDetails) in the EXCEL output of NetAppDocs. THis has changed in 3.4 and Flexvol is splitted up in TAB FlexvolConfiguration and FloxVolSpace Details.

Normaly I used this information to filter volumes based on aggregates, this was fast and very usefull for getting insight in capacity usage.
