.snapshot directory not visible in Windows Explorer, but it is in Command Prompt

I have been seeing sometihng strange in some of our clusters ever since we moved into the OnTap 9.x versions.

From a Windows 8+ or Server 2012+ machine, we are no longer able to navigate to the .snapshot directory in Windows explorer.

If you do a DIR in command prompt, you can see all the sansphots as you should, and the Properties -> Previous Versions tab also works as expected.

Something I have seen is that in if you navigate to the full path in Windows Explorer (such as \\nas.domain.name\share_path\.snapshot\daily.2018-03-02_0010) you can access it. You are then able to access \\nas.domain.name\share_path\.snapshot just like normal until  you close out.

In summary:

Explorer

\\nas.domain.name\share_path\.snapshot                                  - DOES NOT WORK

\\nas.domain.name\share_path\.snapshot\snapshot_name        - DOES WORK

Command Prompt

DIR \\nas.domain.name\share_path\.snapshot                           - DOES WORK

DIR \\nas.domain.name\share_path\.snapshot\snapshot_name - DOES WORK

Snapshots are set to visible for all shares.

Re: Disk assignment

Hi,

To make auto-assign work on half-populated shelves, place disks equally on lower half and 6 on far right bays to begin with. That is, 6 disks from bays 0-5 and 6 disks from bays 18-23. After the container disk is assigned in an ADP-configured system, ONTAP's software will handle any partitioning and partition assignments that are required, without user intervention.

Re: Quotas on SM destination (7-mode)

Hi,

Quotas are always disabled on a SnapMirror volume destination, regardless of whether quotas are enabled on the source volume. If you try to enable quotas on a volume destination, SnapMirror displays an error message. Quotas are not disabled on SnapMirror destination qtrees.

To convert a SnapMirror destination to a writable volume or qtree, please refer https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMM1278348/html/onlinebk/protecting/task/t_oc_prot_sm-convert-to-writable.html#t_oc_prot_sm-convert-to-writable

High data modification problem with snapmirror fills the volume / LUN

$

Hello everyone, we have a problem with the volumes that have snapmirror activated. In normal operation, everything works well, there is self-growth, ... etc.
But when large modifications or high data loads are made on the LUN, the snap is triggered, competing with the productive data and filling the volume until the growth of the LUN stops. This produces an application stop, etc ...

There is a way to create the snaps in a "SNAP volume".
Parameterize said snap so that it does not use anything more than a% of space of the volume for example only 20% and if it exceeds that it stops the snap but does not eat free space of the possible extension of the LUN.

All ideas and experiences with snap will be well received.

Thank you very much, hello.

*** EDIT I was able to access the link by searching for KB 1000208 directly.

But, that artical states "This can result in the inability to see certain snapshots from the Windows Previous Versions" which is not the issues I am having. We can see the Previous Version tab without issues, it is the .snapshot directory we cannot see.

Thank you for that information, but the third shelf in question isn't hald populated, it is a full third sheld on a NON-ADP enabled system.

Very slow reclaim of space in volume

$

Hi all - If someone could help with this question would be awesome.

Here's our setup.

  • FAS3220 running 8.2.3p2 7-Mode
  • We have Exchange 2010 running on a Windows 2012 (non-R2) virtual machine on ESXi 5.5
  • The volumes are presented into the OS using LUNS via RDMs.
  • The particular drive we're seeing an issue with is a 780GB thin provisioned LUN presenting a 800gb thick provisioned volume.  it stores Exchange logs which are deleted (~300gb worth) nightly.
  • We have enabled space_alloc on the LUNs to ensure when files (actually Exchange Logs) are deleted, we get the space back on the volume.
  • We keep only one nightly snapshot of the volume, and then it goes to SnapVault. So only 1 snap exists on the volume outside backup hours.

The issue:

We're seeing very very slow (sometimes none at all) space reclaimation on the volume after the logs are purged. We see the space come back in Windows immediately.

For example, on one log volumes right now we have 200GB of data visible in Windows.

On that 800GB NetApp volume, NetApp shows 125GB available, 470gb Data used, and 204GB of snaps = 674GB total.

The controllers on the NetApps aren't being smashed (sitting around 50% or lower).

Is this descrepency due to the space reclaim in the background being very slow? or could there be some other issue? Is there a way to see the progress of the reclaim or expedite the reclaim process?

Any help would be great.

We've logged a call but it'll probbaly move slowly.

Monitoring an ONTAP cluster with SNMP

$

We've recently acquired a NetApp ONTAP 9.3 FAS Hybrid system that we are trying to monitor with our Nagios monitoring system.

SNMP looks like the easiest way to do this.

We've managed to enable SNMP on the system, and I've obtained the relevant MIB. When browsing the MIB, I can see that the metrics I am most interested in are in:

.1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.2.2

eg

.1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.2.2.23.0 is CacheAge

However, when querying these OIDs, they don't see to exist on the system. When I do an snmpwalk from the parent OID:

snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 2c <x.x.x.x> .1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.2

I see the following stream:

<snip>
enterprises.789.1.2.1.14.1.13.101.120.116.115.116.111.114.101.48.49.95.48.49 = INTEGER: 8
enterprises.789.1.2.1.14.1.13.101.120.116.115.116.111.114.101.48.49.95.48.50 = INTEGER: 1
enterprises.789.1.2.1.14.1.14.101.120.116.115.116.111.114.101.48.49.95.48.49 = Counter64: 865366553
enterprises.789.1.2.1.14.1.14.101.120.116.115.116.111.114.101.48.49.95.48.50 = Counter64: 868700321
enterprises.789.1.2.6.1.0 = Timeticks: (23697690) 2 days, 17:49:36.90
enterprises.789.1.2.6.2.0 = Counter32: 443478
enterprises.789.1.2.6.3.0 = Counter32: 346
enterprises.789.1.2.6.4.0 = Counter32: 0<snip>

The walk jumps from

enterprises.789.1.2.1.

to

enterprises.789.1.2.6.

skipping all the OIDs I am interested in in between.

Is there something extra I need to do on the system to expose the OIDs I am looking for?

I see multiple EMS events logged into cluster from multiple vservers. Any way we can troubleshoot this issue.Any direction is appreciated.

secd.lsa.noServers: None of the LSA servers configured for Vserver are currently accessible via the network.

secd.lsa.noServers

This message occurs when none of the configured LSA servers are accepting connections.

Ensure that all configured LSA servers are responding to requests. Ensure that there are no networking issues stopping the cluster from communicating with the configured LSA servers.

Did you ever get an answer on this.  I am just now having to take on a migration from SAMBA where this worked and it doesn't work as far as I can see in 9.1P8.

Will follow up if I find a definitive answer.

Problems with an _ in the DNS name with OnTap 9.3

I have a AFF system running OnTap 9.3P1 and am seeing a strange issue.  If we have a DNS entry for the cluster mgmt interface ,that contains an "_" character, I recieve the following error when trying to load the System Manager interface.

Bad Request
Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Additionally, a 400 Bad Request error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

If I go to the IP address or a DNS entry that doesn't contain an _ I can logon as normal.

Is anyone else seeing this?

I'm having the same problem instantly after the upgrade from ontap 9.0 to 9.3

Browser console is showing

security audit log show

Has any progress been made on this?

Underscores are not valid in DNS hostname entries.

The authoritative answer is in http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc952.txt

1. A "name" (Net, Host, Gateway, or Domain name) is a text string up
   to 24 characters drawn from the alphabet (A-Z), digits (0-9), minus
   sign (-), and period (.).

Technical deepdive documentation on Snapshot Technology

$

Dear all,

Does anyone know if there is any technical deep dive documentation on snapshot technology in Ontap Cluster Mode (we're running 9.1P10)?

We need a detailed understanding of what happens at the block level when snapshots are taken, exactly what changes are captured and how and when space usage for a snapshot is calculated.

We need this to assist us with some issues we are seeing that we strongly believe are bug related.

Can anyone help?

Can we ask what you believe to be seeing that is bug related?  Environment / Setup, etc...
